Symptoms of a Clogged Septic System

We here at Express Septic Services cannot stress enough how important it is to have your septic system inspected annually. This allows us to handle clogs that developed in the system before they become a huge problem. You do not want your septic system to get clogged. If it does, you may end up with sewage backing up into your home and yard. The following are signs of a clogged septic system.

Sewage Odors

There is a vent on the septic tank to help prevent the sewage odors from making their way into your home or yard. This vent can get clogged, and, consequently, you will have horrible odors in your household drains. Sewage odors are also a sign septic tank is full and needs to be pumped.

Soppy Yard

Another sign that your septic system is getting clogged is if you have soppy spots in your yard above the tank or the drain field. This points to a problem with the septic system’s drainage. Rather than draining through the drain field, the liquid waste is backing up in the system and causing damp yard spots.

Gurgling Drains

You may also hear gurgling sounds coming from your household drains if the septic system is getting clogged. The gurgling that you hear is the sewage and wastewater backing out of the system into your home. In severe cases, the sewage and wastewater will come up out of your drains.

Overgrowth

If there is a section of your yard that is growing excessively, the septic system is clogged and leaking. You may have an overgrowth of weeds in this section, as well. This is a sign that the foliage is getting extra water and natural fertilizer from the septic system. Hence the excess growth.

Backup

As we mentioned above, a clogged septic system can back the sewage into your home. It will come up through the drains and toilets. This can be an environmental nightmare, especially if the system is also leaking into the ground surrounding it. Regular maintenance prevents sewage backup.

Slow Drains

Finally, your household drains will slow down significantly if the septic system is clogged. The reason why the drains are slow is that the water has nowhere to go. Unfortunately, using drain cleaner will not resolve the problem because you have a septic system clogged rather than a clogged plumbing pipe.
